Dr. Alisa Perkins earned her doctoral degree in anthropology at the University of Texas at Austin. She serves as Associate Professor of comparative religion at Western Michigan University. Perkins’ specializes in ethnographic research about Muslim American civic engagement in the Detroit-metro area. Her book Muslim American City: Gender and Religion in Metro Detroit was published by NYU Press in 2020. Perkins is currently focusing on a research project about African American Muslim and African Muslim community leadership in Detroit, both historically and today.
